Magic Slim and The Teardrops
- Pilegaarden, Copenhagen, 3/10/04
Early
this summer I've got my first live dose of this Chicago legend's
raw-as-fuck houserockin' blues, so when I read that Magic
Slim (Morris Holt) and his young Teardrops guys were in town
again during Copenhagen Blues Festival I was happier than
Arnold Schwarzenegger in a grabass contest. The Magic Slim
experience is a unique sight to behold, The Teardrops start
with 2-3 songs while the 6 foot 4 giant sips whiskey in the
bar. Then the 67-year old 300 pound behemoth joins'em on the
stage and dish out his hardass electric guitar noize while
sporting a mean manly guttural voice that gives Howlin' Wolf
and Tom Waits a run for the money. And of course tonite he
was again wearing his black cowboy hat and another tacky polyester
suit and complaining about not enough ladies were dancing
to his infectious Delta blues mayhem. Like last time we got
150 minutes of no-frills loud blues excellence with a couple
tunes off his latest album, "Blue Magic", like "Goin'
To Mississippi" and "I Want To See You In The Evening".
My only beef with the show was that this tiny club, Pilegaarden,
was like sitting in a fuckin' classrom in school again with
small tables and kiddie chairs. A cat like Magic Slim should
be seen and heard in smoke-filled rowdy bars packed with horny
drunk women in my humble opinion. Oh yeah, drummer Allen Kirk
bitched backstage about me not bringing him hash joints like
last time, haha. Anyway, Lowcut readers, try check out more
blues acts like Magic Slim (he plays a lot here in Denmark),
than seeing yet another 3rd rate young Hellacopters copy band,
okay? THE BLUES IS ALIVE!!
