K And The Real Kool Kats - Live On Radio TV - Varazdin, Croatia.
(June 2. 2005)
I have previously reviewed an album and a 7" by this
NYC punkrock veteran and his decent brand of Ramones/Jeff
Dahl-ish tunes. But you have to be a real hardcore fan to
enjoy this live dvd. Six songs filmed from a live performance
at some Croatian radio tv show that has same energy level
as snails corpulating, and those ain't sex machines. The old
drummer with huge grey sideburns looks so indifferent and
bored it boggles the mind, wake up! Only the bassist seems
like he's has a pulse. I fail to see the purpose of the release
of this dvd, they could have included a couple of songs on
an enhanced cd and that'd have been cool. Doesn't really give
you the appetite of going out to see band live which I'm sure
wasn't the point of the dvd. Again, only for diehard fans
of Kevin K.

Satanico
Pandemonium (1973. Gilberto Martinez Solares)
FROM BRIDE OF CHRIST TO SLAVE OF SATAN! Pasolini's "Decameron"
(1970) and especially Ken Russell's notorious "The Devils"
(1972) spawned a flood of exploitation films that fused religious
images, convents, and horny sexual repressed nuns. The mix
of lesbian sex, violence, torture, masturbation and catholic
icons was (of course) met with an outrage from the moral authorities
and a lot of media coverage thus making the producers of these
'blasphemeous' movies a bundle of money. The genre was later
dubbed 'nunsploitation'. Some of the more entertaining nunsploitationers
were "Love Letters Of A Portuguese Nun", "Flavia",
"Les Demons", "Alucarda" and "Behind
Convent Walls". The unique and surreal "Satanico
Pandemonium/La Sexorcista/The Possessed Novice" were
made in Mexico who's even more religious repressed than Spain
or Italy. Sister Maria (Cecilia Pezet) is a devout innocent
looking nun. One day she meets a naked man (Enrique Rocha)
in the countryside, he (the devil) offers her an apple. Terrified
she runs back to her convent. During the following nights
she is haunted by nightmarish images of satan, and starts
violently whipping herself and begins to wear a barbwire belt.
She has sex with a 13 year old boy, and another nun tells
Sister Maria that she's in love with her. Scenes of hot lesbo
action unfolds, climaxing in the ultra gory stabbing of an
elderly nun. After multiple nun murderes she accepts the fact
that she's possessed by satan, and turns to him for salvation.
I won't spoil anymore of this dreamlike art sleaze masterpiece.
Despite the film's graphic scenes of violence, sex and torture
"Satanico Pandemonium" has more in common with Bunuel
than Jess Franco, more Herzog than Joe D'amato. The cinematography
is outstanding, the art design is sublime, the FX is bloody
and are mixed with neat camera tricks. The peculiar score
is made up of many instruments from different cultures and
strange animal noises.
The dvd from Mondo Macabro, who specializes in 'The Wild Side
Of World Cinema', has an excellent Widescreen print and it's
in Spanish with English subtitles. Among the extras are a
short docu on the film; "The Devil Went Down To Mexico"
where scriptwriter Aldolfo Martinez Solares talks about the
film in great details. His father, who directed the film died
in 1997, was one of South America's most prolific filmmakers
with more than 200 films to his credits incl. Lon Chaney Jr.
Werewolf flicks, Santo wrestling horror movies and he was
a close friend of Bunuel. Real prostitutes were used in the
orgy scenes. "House Of The Writhering Nun" is another
brilliant docu on the nunsploitation genre by Nigel Wingrove
of the infamous British Redemption video label. The dvd is
a must for fans of psychotronic 70s cinema and bizarre films
in general.
P.S. The title of the film was used for Selma Hayek's character
in "From Dusk Till Dawn".

Hoo Doo Cinema:
Remembering Otis concertfilm + The Howlin' Wolf Story documentary.
- September 13th, Loppen
This
was the first in a hopefully long series of music movie sunday
afternoons at Loppen in Christiania. The brains behind this
project is LowCuts own moviebuff Jens and booker at Loppen
Rasmus. Also they spin cool vinyl at the turntables. It starts
around six in the evening and you can buy very cheap food
and beer. This is an excellent way to treat your hangovers
on a sunday, watching interesting documentaries, listening
to cool music, hang around and talk with people without being
too drunk and too stupid! The films were good and despite
a little lack of audience it was grat to see both younger
and older people attending the arrangement. Apparently soul
music build bridges! You may call this a Chill-out club for
adult rock'n'rollers who dig blues, Soul, 60s R&B, Country,
Folk, Bluegrass etc. Afterwards we drank some more beer and
of course I could not just go home, so me and some folks went
to a horrible bar/disco in center of town because the entrance
was cheap and the beers for free!
All in all a pleasent evening and night doing something a
bit different. I'll be there next time! And so should you,
dear reader!
Next "Hoo Doo Cinema # 2" arrangement : November
6th.
(Freddie King live performance from the TV show "The!!!!Beat"
1966.
Screamin' Jay Hawkins documentary).
Maybe live acoustic 'surprises' in the future, stay tuned!
