Horrorpops
- Bring It On! CD (Hellcat/Epitaph/Bonnier)
Some drunken German psychobillies at the recent Rotterdam
Rumble tried to tell me how bad this album is, but I think
people fail to see that Horrorpops ain't traditional psychobilly
and therefore shouldn't be judged as such. To me it's PowerPopBilly
and Patricia's voice gives their sound a very 80's new wave-y
feel, I mean, they even perform Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell"
live! It's not rocket science, just good clean party music.
Their cartoon-ish image probably don't help their appeal among
'puritists', but as always I judge bands by their tunes, not
their silly haircuts. Patricia's spouse Kim are mostly known
for Nekromanitx and his coffin shaped bass, but here he delivers
some neat twangy guitar licks. I'm glad Horrorpops came up
with a new record since the missus has been playing their
previous "Hell Yeah!" almost everyday for a year,
although this is just more of the same.

MOB - We All Repeat the Past CD (Lärm)
On their 3rd record, MOB (interviewed in LowCut # 6) have
finally managed to transfer all the crushing heaviness of
their live shows to a studio recording, and at last they fully
live up to that monicker: Monsters Of Brutality. Live, you
get a picture of how this band works: You have a tiny, frail
singer baring his soul in a manner not too far removed from
The Cure's Robert Smith, and then on his flanks are a bunch
of vikings who seem to believe they're really playing in Bathory
or High On Fire. That makes for a quite interesting clash,
not unlike Basque (lo:muêso) (reviewed last issue),
but not as pretentious and way, way heavier. If the indie
tingings might turn you off, the wall of noise should draw
you in, and it's very rewarding. "Favourite Crusade"
is a personal favorite for this indian summer. Look forward
to an interview next issue. http://www.mobsite.dk
