Dollhouse January 20th, Stengade 30

By Jens

Hot damn! This was one groovy rock’n’roll nite at Stengade. 8 pm local rockers, The Breakers, had a reception for new excellent ”Have A Laugh” upstairs at Stalingrad and gave us half an hour of some of their new more mod/soul-ish tracks with new strummer Daniel Hecht. They even had a cool horn section in the line-up. Sadly I couldn’t see all of their set, since I had to interview Dollhouse (see interview elsewhere in issue).
I missed most of Casino 66 since I was outside in the hellish snow storm looking for a kebab. Been awhile since I’ve seen Dollhouse but I really dug their latest 10”, ”The Basement Takes”, so my expectations were fuckin’ high as a kite. Singer/guitarist Chris started the show in good style by dedicating the set to soul icon Wilson Pickett, who sadly died the day before. Then the boys tore into a sensational show of oldies and newies like ”Man On The Move”, ”What You Want”, ”Shangrila Tiger”, ”Come On, Baby” etc. which showed why Dollhouse is the damn best Swedish live act. Their mix of blues, soul, hardrock and psych is second to none, and the rhythm section of Yoda and Marcus were tighter than a nun’s bunghole, and Chris has really grown as a frontman and a singer. And their hired hand at live shows, Mauro, dished out some tasty licks. The crowd was in a frenzy, and the mood rose to new heights when they came back to do encores with Lorenzo Woodrose on axe. MC5’s ”Rocket Reducer No. 62 (Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa)” and ”Black To Comm” got an outerworldly workover. Another triumph for the most underrated Swedish rockband, 2006 is looking good with their upcoming ”The Royal Rendezvous” album produced by Nicke Royale.
