A brief talk with Mr. Roadburn - Walter Hoeijmakers
By Tomsen
LC:
Thanks for a great festival! Hope you have stressed down.
I would like to ask you a couple of questions about Causa
Sui and On Trial and so. On Trial has a long history, and
they played one of the very first Roadburn Festivals. Are
they a favourite band of yours?
Walter: On Trial played the 4th Roadburn Festival
with Nebula. I saw On Trial already in the mid nineties, and
I really love their 13 Floor Elevators psychedelica meets
classic rock meets garage rock, played with Detroit simplicity.
I consider them as one of the finest psychedelic bands in
Europe, and I'm really glad that we had the band at Roadburn
2007. The simply deserved to be on the bill.
LC: Have you heard Dragontears and how do you find
that project?
Walter: As of now, the Dragontears album is my strongest
contender for album of the year. It's like vintage On Trial
paired to Spine-of God era Monster Magnet. Wow! I would love
to have Dragon Tears on the bill for Roadburn 2008.
I case they read this interview, please get in touch ...
LC: You seem to have picked up Causa Sui at a very
early phase. Are they the new "wonderkids" in psychedelic
rock?
Walter: I really have a soft spot for Causa Sui. I
don't like phrases as "wonderkinds", but this band
has something special going on. It's not a baby Monster Magnet
or something like that. Causa Sui delivers heavy psych rock
at its finest. Both their albums harkens back to Hendrix,
Blue Cheer and even Krautrock. It's the music I like the most,
and I'm glad to see these youngsters keepin' the psychedelic
scene alive.
LC: How much do you believe in those guys? You picked
them almost unknown, and even used one of their songs for
Roadburns myspace site.
Walter: I really believe in Causa Sui. Their new album,
"Free Ride", is a modern psych masterpiece -these
guys should be touring with the likes of Dungen.
LC: Did they live up to your expectations at the festival?
Have you ever seen them live before?
Walter: I went to last years Stoned From the Underground
Festival in Germany, especially to see Causa Sui. They blew
me away, and I offered them a slot on Roadburn 2007 right
after their gig. I liked their set at Roadburn, and I even
took some time of to do their lightshow myself. Causa Sui's
Jakob made some wonderful imagery I could use. Jakob's a very
good video editor, and his imagery was simple as pychedelic
as their set. I hope to collaborate with him at next years
Roadburn.
LC: How many Danish bands will appear at next years
Roadburn Festival?
Walter: I'm not sure yet. I'd love to have Dragontrears
on the bill though.
