(Vampisoul)

In the early 60’s, the Portuguese brothers Lameirinhas had some moderate success throughout Europe from their exile in Belgium as Jess & James. Inspired by the free jazz scene that was happening around them, they took this approach and applied it to their own pop music with the aid of two US jazz musicians. Along came Souffriau, a Belgian electronic experimental composer, who would take their master tapes and manipulate them, adding by turns eerie and cheesy sound effects to the music that was being channeled through the hip pop combo. The result is a strange and charming album, the music shifting shape between loose and clattering psych in the opener “Chewing Gum Delirium” and more straight Booker T. & the MG’s styled funk rock on other songs, with washes of noise layered on top of everything. Not exactly free, but exciting indeed.
